The Streets Are Free A Community Drumsical featuring BoomShake Participants & Guest Artists Saturday June 13 | 5pm Eastside Arts Alliance 2277 International Blvd, Oakland $10-$25 sliding scale (no one turned away) RSVP | Buy Tickets Inspired by the book "The Streets are Free" based on the true story of the children of the barrio of San Jose de la Urbina in Caracas, Venezuela. Although the mayor promises the children a playground, they realize that they must build it themselves. And they do just that. Join us for this showcase and party! BoomShake participants and Guest Artists will use storytelling, drumming, and singing to explore how we as a inter-generational community can work to uplift, preserve and sustain ourselves.

Dear Community, In less than two weeks, two grand juries failed to indict police officers who killed unarmed men. In months, more and more cases of unarmed killings by police officers emerge. For hundreds of years, countless black and brown bodies have been slaughtered. Coming up with words to capture all the feelings, thoughts, and ideas I have are impossible right now. I am heartbroken, angry, exhausted, and trapped. This pain is not new. This struggle is not new. Amidst all the pain, I am also inspired, motivated, strengthened and I feel loved. We cannot remain silent People are out in the streets, in schools, and at home speaking out. This movement is a reminder that our voices need to be louder and our actions grander. The concept for BoomShake was and is born out of a need to express music  as a tool for our survival, of recognizing and honoring our cultural differences, and to create a platform to build community. DRUMLUCK: Showcase & Potluck- December 14

As the year comes to a close, we celebrate 'Music for Us by Us', our participants, and ever-growing Family! Since we started this year, the BoomShake family has grown; 3 elementary drumming classes at Manzanita SEED (from 1 last session), a full Women & Trans Drum Corp class, various sessions of Tykes Tunes in collaboration with Lotus Bloom as well as Our Family Coalition, and everyone else we've met along the way. Performances by our Manzanita SEED participants and our Womens Drum Corp. Participatory workshops and DJ music will keep everyone plugged in! Sunday December 14th 5:00-8:00pm Solespace 1714 Telegraph Ave. Oakland, CA 94606 $$ Donation (no one turned away) This is a potluck so please bring a healthy and nutritious dish to share.
