On December 9 & 10th 2017, you can be part of a movement of self-determination and inspiration in our world. Be immersed in young people as active agents of our healing and joy. Sing, move and make beats in support of our collective freedom.

Be the change, make the headlines, lift the voices of the people, join the resistance, #standupfightback

Directed by Monica Hastings-Smith, Streets Are Free-Drumsical: Notes on a New World Order will sow seeds of revolution, inspiration, empowerment, and multigenerational participation. Adapted from the children’s book by Kurusa about a true story of Venezuelan children fighting for a safe place to play outside in their barrio, this show is set in a transformed "Wild & Beautiful” Oakland. As we deal with Bay Area's harsh urban reality, the children organize and unite us in keeping the streets free.

Streets Are Free-Drumsical: Notes on a New World Order features participants from BoomShake’s community programs including Abundant Beginnings Forest Freedom School, Manzanita SEED & Manzanita Community Elementary, Womxn’s Street Drumming, and artistic collaborations with Nkeiruka Oruche, Pedro Rosales, Sarah Norr & Tossie Long.

Please reserve a ticket to ensure availability as the shows are expected to be at capacity.

This project is supported in part by the Oakland City Council and funded by the City of Oakland's Cultural Funding Program, the Akonadi Foundation and our Community/Family & Friends.

In a time when art and music in Oakland are under siege with rising attacks against the freedom of people of color to play music in public spaces, we need you to take a stand for opportunities to gather, share our culture and express ourselves creatively.

Help us reach our goal of raising $3,000 so that we can continue to be the heartbeat of the resistance.

Themes in Streets Are Free-Drumsical: Notes on a New World Order

Streets Are Free-Drumsical: Notes on a New World Order is a conjure of our utopia, through the lens of the beautiful struggle of people of color, women, trans and gender nonconforming people and youth. With drumming and storytelling we create space for happiness and provide support to movements for our freedom.
Bringing you an oh-so-lively intergenerational storybook look at:

  • reconnecting the people to the beauty, energy and magic of the land, animals and people of Wild Oakland
  • boldly confronting the police state and considering prison abolishment, restorative justice, justice circles
  • clowning around and playing with truth and lies in media, holding media and ourselves up for ridicule and consideration
  • centering youth as serious activist magicians, creating their environment as front line actors and activists.
  • wild reimagining and manifesting the world we want to see and live in through art and magic
  • moments of unabashed silliness
